ABOUT THE CONCERT

New York Philharmonic Principal Clarinet Anthony McGill gives the world premiere of a new work for clarinet and orchestra written by Michigan native James Lee III — and Kalamazoo hears it first!

The rumored mistranslation of Tchaikovsky's sixth and final symphony from "Passionate" to "Mournful" or "Evoking Pity" adds to the tragic irony of his declaration that it was "the best thing I ever composed or shall compose," a sentiment proved unexpectedly true by his sudden death nine days after its premiere.
